Little House on the Prairie

As a child I loved the series “Little House on the Prairie”. The plot is quickly told: It’s about the American farmer family Ingalls, 1878 they pack their belongings on a horse cart to look for a new home and end up in Walnut Grove, Minnesota. The couple (Charles u. Caroline) and their three daughters (Mary, Laura and Carrie) struggle with the forces of nature and survive some illnesses. However, they have to work hard and the kids get annoyed by bratty Nellie Oleson.

On the video-sharing website “Dailymotion” you can watch a few of the episodes: (English)

I just loved everything about the series, the problems, which were solved by the cohesion of the family, the regular conflicts between Laura and Nellie, the modest life in the country and even the clothes.

So I crocheted for Emily, my Dress up doll, a complete pioneer outfit (along with a new wig). Then I went with Emily in the garden and she stood there patiently with 36 degree / 97 °F midday heat!

The pioneer clothing protected the people from the sun and long sleeves were worn all year. They usually had only two or three outfits, two for the work and one “good” dress for celebrations or the church.

The clothes were simple, but there were also dresses with embroidery. The women always wore an apron and outside the house also a bonnet and long socks and shoes, which were laced.

The pattern is for a dress with long sleeves and collar. Plus, there’s the pattern for the apron, the bonnet, the shoes and a wig with braids. But there are no limits to your imagination, you can change colors, use lace or some pearls.

I made the pink dress without the sleeves and the collar, but I sew lace onto the the clothes, which makes Emily looks sooo sweet.

In summertime it is much better to stay outside: swimming, cycling, eating ice cream and all the other wonderful summer activities. But if a rainy day sneaks in, you can get comfortable on the couch, watch the video and crochet pioneer clothes for Emily 🙂

Have fun, see you,
Karin

    1. I used to lay down on the floor in front of the TV with a pillow under my neck and watched the show. I wished so much I could live like them, but now I’m glad, that this dream didn’t come true 🙂
