The second wish

(Continued from Wishes)

“What I want is a Smurfette”, said the sweet little girl. This time it was an easy request to fulfill because I remembered having seen the perfect pattern on AmigurumiBB’s blog. I was positive the little girl would like it.

The pattern was easy to follow and I had a lot of fun crocheting the Smurfette. When I had finished it I put it in a box to send to my little friend the next day. But things didn’t turn out quite as I’d planned. I was awoken the following morning by a squeaky voice in my ear,
“Hey, get up sleepyhead!”

I opened my eyes and there before me, staring reproachfully, stood the Smurfette! Suddenly I was wide awake and at a loss for words.
“You’re alive?” I finally stammered out.
“Well yes, you made me and here I am.

It felt a bit like I’d woken up in the middle of the story of Pinocchio but I didn’t have time to think about it then as the Smurfette was demanding I play with her and watch TV and read and….in short anything and everything all at once.

I cobbled together a chair for her and sat her down with a book but then I had to leave her alone and rush off to work.

When I came home that evening I found her sat in front of my tablet surfing the net.
“I didn’t give you permission to play with my tablet”, I said angrily.
“Oh, I’m sorry, but Gargamel has been sneaking around here.”
“And what’s Gargamel got to do with you surfing the net then?”
“Well, I’ve googled a spell so that if he shows up I’ll be able to defend myself.”

What a load of codswallop, I thought to myself but left her surfing the net and didn’t say a word. I was too tired to start an argument and this way I could have some peace and quiet – I thought.

Later on there was a knock at the door.
“Are you expecting anyone?” asked the Smurfette.
“No, not at the moment,” I replied.
“You had better open the door carefully and then jump to one side quickly,” she whispered in my ear, “this must be him.”
“Don’t be daft,” I said, “it’ll just be my neighbour come round to ask for a cup of sugar or some coffee or something”, and I swore there and then that I would never again crochet a Smurfette.

I got up and went to the door and opened it and then everything happened in a blur. There stood Gargamel grinning at me stupidly. I jumped to one side and the Smurfette stepped forward and uttered something like “saxapraxschrumpfdidumpf” (well, at least that’s what it sounded like to me).

Gargamel gave a sudden lurch then shrank. He cursed and shouted loudly and was obviously furious. I grabbed him by the scruff of his neck and popped him onto the palm of my hand and held him there. He struggled with all his might but to no avail, Gargamel was the size of a mouse!

“Now, you just be still and keep quiet or I’ll feed you to the cat”, I threatened. I don’t actually have a cat, but he didn’t know that and he quaked with fear and didn’t make a sound.

“Now what do we do?” I asked the Smurfette, my voice trembling along with the rest of me, I was at the end of my tether by now.
“I’ll take him with me down to Smurftown where all the Smurfs can decide what’s best to do with him.”

I was so relieved that the Smurfette was going to take him away and I suddenly had the urge to say something that I’d never had the right opportunity to say before.

“Beware of the dark side”, I said with a deep voice.
I thought this quote from Star Wars was most appropriate under the circumstances, in retrospect I suppose it came to mind as I was in a state of nervous exhaustion what with talking amigurumi dolls and shrinking evil wizards on my doorstep, not to mention a hard day at work.

But the Smurfette just grinned and replied,
“May the force be with me!”

I handed her Gargamel and with just a final wave of her hand she disappeared. I haven’t heard from her since but I hope she comes back soon so that I can give her to the little girl.
